Gluten free pizza at Proove

***Update*** I’ve had a few comments posted about concerns with cross contamination at Proove, so please beware. Maybe worth a phonecall before you go.

Thanks to Emily Lovewell for this review of Proove, in Broomhill:

We tend to stick to restaurants we know can provide gluten free options for children and when my son asks for pizza we usually go for Pizza Express as they have always been reliable. In January when the request was made for pizza we decided to see if there was anywhere else. I looked on Trip Advisor and found that a restaurant called Proove in Broomhill have gluten free pizzas. I telephoned to book and asked if they provide children’s gluten free pizza and was assured that they do. When we got there we could order gluten free dough bites and gluten free children’s pizza with our son able to choose 2 toppings. When the pizza came out I did double check that it was gluten free as it was fluffy with air bubbles and really light. It was gluten free and my son loved it. We will definitely be going back!

We called at Proove on spec last week on a rare child-free evening, and it was buzzing – so much that we couldn’t get a table. And that makes me even more keen to try again! My advice would definitely be to book a table.

  1. Proove pizza actually isn’t suitable for coeliacs! They do a gluten-free pizza, but no separate oven, so lots of cross contamination. 🫠

      • I don’t think so. Last time I called, I asked if they had a GF pizza and they said yes but warned me that it wasn’t cooked separately so wasn’t suitable for coeliacs/gluten allergies. This was about a year ago though, so it might be worth checking again. (Also wanted to say thanks for making this list of restaurants, it’s immensely useful!)

      • Thank you! And that’s useful to know. Although I don’t know of any pizza place that has a separate oven for GF – they normally just use separate trays and don’t cook gluten containing pizzas at the same time. Pizza Express take extra measures to reduce contamination by only having GF flour for stretching out the regular pizzas. I imagine there’s a lot of airborne flour in a pizza place!

  2. We chose Prove to eat out with my son who has coeliacs and although they do gluten free options they could not guarantee cross contamination. So pointless really.

    • That’s unfortunately the case with many restaurants. Plenty have a disclaimer in the small print because they have wheat in their kitchen (so do I). That’s why it’s important to have a conversation with the staff about what cross contamination measures they put in place and you can make a judgement on whether you think it’s safe. Places accredited to Coeliac UK or those who have no gluten at all are the safest bet.

  3. I used to love proove but they reduced their gluten safety measures a few years ago and I was very ill. Haven’t wanted to go back again despite the beautiful pizza as I can’t handle the contamination
