    South Street Kitchen

I love colourful food! Look at this lovely looking lunch in South Street Kitchen at Park Hill. I’ve been in the area a couple of times recently and discovered this delightful independent cafe serving Middle Eastern inspired vegetarian food.

Since Nourish and Eten in the town centre closed, Sheffield has really been really short on good cafes, so it’s great to find somewhere new (not that new – it’s been open for over a year). I can’t say the gluten free choice was overwhelming, but the staff were accommodating of me being coeliac, and a couple of options were marked GF on the menu, which made it nice and easy. Frankly, I can be satisfied with just one option as long as it’s safe and I feel welcome!

The cafe is located on the ground floor of the first phase of development at Park Hill Flats, overlooking the city. Outside, the cafe is quite unassuming, but inside, it’s rather cool with a great vibe. There’s lots of exposed concrete, as you might expect from the Park Hill development, and they’ve had fun with the decor, even hiding these little guys in the old fittings.

I ordered the aubergine, halloumi, basil and muhammara (red pepper dip) rolls, which were served in a really flavoursome tomato sauce. And I got to choose two of the vibrant looking salads to go with it. I chose a cauliflower salad and a red cabbage based one. It was all delicious, and a generous portion.

It’s nice to read on the cafe’s website that sustainability is important as well – they use ethical local suppliers and green cleaning products. And you can take your own containers for takeaway food.

I really hope South Street Kitchen increases (or at least maintains) its gluten free offer. It’s great to have somewhere to go close to the city centre – the cafe is only a couple of minutes’ walk up the hill from Sheffield train station. And I’m looking forward to seeing what else the Park Hill development brings to our city in the future…

    The George, Castleton

We had a rather soggy trip out to Castleton recently to meet some friends, and I had a good meal in The George Inn. Sadly, I forgot to take a photo of it, so we’ll have to make do with one I took of the outside in the rain.

This is a really traditional, cozy pub in the Peak District, that has a reasonable gluten free offer, a good understanding of cross contamination and a separate fryer for gluten free chips – hurray!

They have quite a few items marked as GF or GF option on the menu and were happy to talk through the options. Starters included olives, soup, belly pork and nachos. For mains they offer fish pie, veggie shepherd’s pie, salads, gluten free pizzas, sharing nachos, gammon steak and others. Also a Sunday lunch option, but without some of the trimmings, of course.

I chose the vegetarian shepherd’s pie, which was made with lentils and mixed veg, topped with a goats’ cheese mashed potato. Sometimes pub veggie meals can be a bit hit and miss, but I loved this and am going to try it at home. The goats’ cheese gave it an interesting depth of flavour which is sometimes missing in veggie versions of meat dishes.

We ordered a side of sweet potato fries because the fryer had been turned on especially for me. Would have been rude not to!

The non-GFs in the family enjoyed the bangers and mash ‘your way’, with a choice of six different sausages, five flavours of mash and five sauces. This, we have already replicated at home on a smaller scale for friends, as it was such a good idea!

I’m sure they had some pudding options on the blackboard as well, but we ventured out in the deluge to one of the traditional sweet shops for a treat to take with us up to a Peak Cavern tour.
