    Thai Traveller

*** Since my review, the Thai fishcake recipe was changed and they are no longer GF, but the curries are and noodle dishes can still be made GF if requested***

I was very pleased to hear on the grapevine that Thai at the Travellers in Holmesfield has been re-incarnated, as Thai Traveller in Abbeydale. It’s the same head chef and a very similar menu – although I confess I haven’t studied it, I just went for one of the usuals! This time the setting is a much smaller bistro on Hutcliffe Wood Road, just off Abbey Lane near Beauchief. Hopefully a much better location for passing trade.

This has come as a very pleasant surprise, following the closure of Thai at the Travellers earlier this year and then the loss of Hui Wei. Little in the way of oriental food to be had unless I made it myself!

So we ordered a takeaway – some Thai fishcakes for a starter, followed by chicken Pad Thai and a red chicken Thai curry, with some steamed rice. I know there are very limited options on starters, but all of the curries are made gluten free, and probably some of the other stir fries can be. A conversation with the staff is definitely important, as I think they modify some of the recipes – certainly the Pad Thai.

The takeaway lived up to my expectations and was as if it had never been away. Look forward to a Massaman next time…

    Thai Thai Ka

***Update October 2019 – this is now closed, but they have opened in the Abbeydale area. See review of Thai Traveller.***

After the recent disappointment of Thai at the Travellers in Holmesfield closing down, we went in search of its sister restaurant in Broomhill. I was relieved to find that Thai Thai Ka has a virtually identical menu, including my beloved Thai fish cakes (below).

This isn’t somewhere with a gluten free menu, but the staff have a good understanding and can tell you which dishes can and can’t be made gluten free. Unfortunately, the Thai fish cakes are the only starter that’s ok but I don’t mind as I enjoy them so much.

Many of the main courses are fine, as long as you ask for them to be gluten free as they cook them separately/differently. That includes the Thai and Massaman curries, and various stir fries. They also make a lovely GF pad Thai.

The prawn crackers are not GF unfortunately, but they seemed to be fine with me bringing a bag of supermarket ones in, as we were ordering plenty of other food.

    Just a shame they’re a bit too far for a takeaway…
