  • Joni at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet

    Joni at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet

I went to a stained glass workshop before Christmas with a good friend at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. At lunchtime, we popped to the new cafe for a bite to eat. I was delighted to find that the cafe is Joni, who used to sell the most amazing macarons at the Christmas markets pre-Covid. There is another cafe in Outibridge but I’ve never been to that one.

We didn’t have loads of time, but I’d pre-ordered a rainbow salad, which was really nourishing and such lovely colours (clue’s in the name…) It contained turmeric roasted cauliflower, marinated chickpeas, avocado, harissa spiced squash, slaw and roasted cherry tomatoes. My favourite kind of lunch.

There are a few other gluten free items on the menu such as soup, bhaji wraps and marinated chicken flatbreads, however they are marked as “gluten free option” so I can’t say whether they would actually come with wraps or flatbreads. They have some breakfast items as well, like bacon butties, avocado toast and pesto mushrooms.

We didn’t have time to indulge in a sweet treat as we had to get back to the stained glass, but there were a few gluten free options, all reassuringly stored on the top shelf of the counter to avoid falling crumbs. Rocky road, flapjacks and cannoli were on offer that day.

Definitely somewhere to go back, although it’s a busy place and not that big, so I’d definitely recommend booking.

  • I ate all the pies: Pieminister restaurant review

I ate all the pies: Pieminister restaurant review

***Update Feb 2026 – Pieminister Sheffield has sadly closed but look out for other branches as their pies are wonderful.***

We were in town last night for one of the boys’ Christmas concerts at the cathedral, so we took the opportunity to check out Pieminister on Division Street for a fast feast beforehand.

The restaurant is a very industrial looking place inside, with bare walls and simple decor, and although we got there quite early, it had a nice atmosphere when it got a bit busier.  I was pleased to be given a gluten free menu (which was particularly good so I didn’t have to spend too much time looking at all the things I couldn’t have). Unfortunately, the gluten free pies are 55p more than their regular counterparts – it’s not much on a £5.95 pie, but it’s just a bit disappointing.

We shared some starters: pigs in blankets, halloumi fries and crackling with apple sauce. All excellent, but unfortunately everybody dived in before I got chance to take the  photo, so it looks like the portions were much smaller than they actually were.

For mains, there are three gluten free pastry pies available, which are the same as those in the shops. There’s the Moo (steak and ale), the Ranger (chicken leek and bacon) and the Heidi (goats’ cheese, spinach, sweet potato and red onion). There was also a fish pie which is gluten free.

I chose the Moo, and it was ace. I really do think their pastry is the best gluten free pastry I’ve tried. I ordered skin on fries (very generous portion) and smoky beans, which were lovely. There are other gf sides available, such as slaw, mash, cheesy mash, and peas. I was reassured by the server that they have three fryers, one just for chips, one just for halloumi and the other for gluten items, so it seems they are well on top of their cross contamination. (The other picture is also a gluten free Moo, but on top of cheesy mash.)

I really didn’t need a pudding after that, but I shared a lovely Honey Bee sundae, which was frozen yoghurt, fig pieces, honey comb, pistachios and honey. It was absolutely delicious. This was one of about three gluten free ice cream sundae options, so not too shabby. A proper Yorkshire portion, too.

Over all, the service was nice and quick, the food great and we really enjoyed ourselves. I hope they expand the range beyond the three gluten free pies, as there are lots of other lovely sounding fillings in the regular range, and you feel like you’re only getting what’s on offer in the shops. But I’m sure we’ll be back there.

  • Craft & Dough

    Craft & Dough

A trip to Kelham Island for history, beer and pizza seemed like a perfect Fathers’ Day outing. We spent a couple of hours looking round the fantastic Kelham Island Museum with my parents and the kids, finding out about Sheffield’s industrial heritage. We even managed to time it so we were able to watch the big steam engine in action. Then we strolled across the street to Craft & Dough for a hearty meal.

I had originally assumed from the name that a place specialising in craft beer and artisan pizza would not be for me, but I was very wrong! I booked based on seeing a photo of a coeliac friend eating an amazing looking pizza here, so I was very excited to come.

Craft & Dough is an independent restaurant with two branches in Sheffield (the other is on Campo Lane in the town centre). The staff were knowledgeable about gluten and reassuring that measures were taken to avoid cross contamination. The gluten free pizza bases were excellent. Between the three gluten free-ers, we ordered a mushroom pizza, a Hendo’s and goats cheese pizza (which also had leeks, balsamic red onions and pumpkin seeds) and a tandoori chicken pizza. I’m not normally one for cuisine culture clash, but I was really drawn to the tandoori chicken pizza and it hit the spot – the spicing was just right for a pizza, and with the combination of raita and coriander it was really delicious.

Most of the pizza toppings are gluten free, but there’s the odd thing you can’t have, including Nduja sausage, and a couple of quirky ones such as Bombay mix and Frazzles. Still, plenty to choose from, and none of your usual Hawaiian or tuna and sweetcorn pizzas – these are all interesting flavours. Unfortunately the GF toppings aren’t specified on the menu, but the staff were very helpful.

We were also able to eat the chips, which is always a nice treat – these also come with various toppings, although the ‘filthy fries’ toppings had to be slightly changed to make it suitable. We even tried some halloumi fries, which were divine.

We ordered far too much food and had to take some home in pizza boxes. I was most impressed when the waitress clearing the table said she’d clear the gluten and non gluten remains separately to avoid cross contamination in the take out boxes. Spot on – thank you!

On the beer front, there is a bottled Estrella Daura available, but no craft ales as far as I could tell. There is also a decent range of wine, gin and cocktails, but as it was Fathers’ day, I was on driving duty. Next time, I’ll definitely indulge!

  • Thai Thai Ka

    Thai Thai Ka

***Update October 2019 – this is now closed, but they have opened in the Abbeydale area. See review of Thai Traveller.***

After the recent disappointment of Thai at the Travellers in Holmesfield closing down, we went in search of its sister restaurant in Broomhill. I was relieved to find that Thai Thai Ka has a virtually identical menu, including my beloved Thai fish cakes (below).

This isn’t somewhere with a gluten free menu, but the staff have a good understanding and can tell you which dishes can and can’t be made gluten free. Unfortunately, the Thai fish cakes are the only starter that’s ok but I don’t mind as I enjoy them so much.

Many of the main courses are fine, as long as you ask for them to be gluten free as they cook them separately/differently. That includes the Thai and Massaman curries, and various stir fries. They also make a lovely GF pad Thai.

The prawn crackers are not GF unfortunately, but they seemed to be fine with me bringing a bag of supermarket ones in, as we were ordering plenty of other food.

    Just a shame they’re a bit too far for a takeaway…

  • Hui Wei new GF desserts

Great to hear Hui Wei has added some gluten free desserts to their menu. I love the locally made Yee Kwan ice creams, which come in exotic flavours like sesame seed and lychee (not together!). But I’m impressed with the addition of banana and pineapple fritters. It’s so great to find something you wouldn’t normally expect to see on a GF menu!
