Gluten Free Sheffield – eating out

These are the good gluten free food places I know about in Sheffield. I’m sure there are others. It’s constantly evolving as places close and new places open – particularly after the Covid lockdowns, the scene has changed a fair bit. Please feel free to add any other recommendations in the comments. And if you’d like to send in a review of anywhere, please get in touch.

Please note: Menus and owners of restaurants and cafes change, so it’s worth checking gluten free credentials and cross contamination procedures whenever you go anywhere. This is a personal guide rather than a definitive list, and some of the entries are now a few years old!

Castle Inn – Gastro pub opened in 2016. Gluten free flat breads and rotisserie chicken amongst other enticing pub food. Know their stuff when it comes to allergens – we had a great experience here. See my review.

The Doctor’s Orders – Medical themed pub near the Hospital. A bit studenty but good for big portions of hearty food, with GF items marked on the menu. See my review.

The York – Another nice pub that has gluten free dishes marked on the menu, to save you from having to quiz the staff. They have their own smoke house, so plenty of seasonal smoked food. The pub dates back to the mid 1830s when it was a blacksmiths and travellers’ inn. (Update 26/2/15 – their Sunday roasts can be served with gluten free gravy – awesome!)

Lokanta – This Turkish Mezze restaurant has introduced a gluten free early bird menu and have plenty of options for coelicac diners, with hints of more in the future… We had a great selection of mezze – review here.

Thyme Cafe – Everything is made to order so gluten free can be accommodated. I had no trouble choosing something to eat here. They don’t take bookings though.

Catcliffe

Whitby’s Fish & Chip Restaurant – Recommended by a reader that this place do gluten free fish and chips to eat in or take away. It’s worth a trip as they also do starters and other mains such as fish salads – see their menu. We took the small boy there for his birthday so you can read my review here.

Alma’s Indian Brasserie – Up market Indian in Dore. Very nice food and does takeaway. Caters well for coeliacs as plenty of Indian food is naturally gluten free. You need to ask what you can and can’t have but the staff are knowledgeable.

The Summer House – Cafe/restaurant near the train station. The enlarged Summer House has re-introduced a gluten free menu! Good for breafast, lunch, evening meals and cocktails – an all rounder!

The Angel – ***Now 100% gluten free*** Lovely, lovely specialist gluten free pub food in Holmesfield. They completely get it so you can just relax about ordering and eating. Plenty of choice and well worth the drive out. This is a gem of a place and a must for coeliacs. See my new review since the kitchen has gone 100% gluten free.

Yo Sushi – The menu choice is considerably more limited than the full menu, which unfortunately keeps taunting you as it passes on the conveyor, but it’s still worth it for the nigiri sushi and sashimi. They can provide gluten free soy sauce if you ask for it. Try my favourite crispy salmon skin ISO sushi – very tasty and great value as one of their green plates.

Homemade by Thelma’s – Cafe and Bistro, serving breakfasts, sandwiches and cakes, and twice weekly “burger and bistro” nights. They offer gluten free food as well as veggie, vegan and meaty. I keep meaning to call in here…

Mediterranean – Fish, seafood and tapas restaurant in Sharrow. I went there once before I started the blog and had a great experience. They didn’t have a gluten free menu but as everything is cooked freshly, the chef was happy to tailor dishes from their regular menu. Very helpful staff, too.

Aesthete Coffee and Kitchen – Recommended by Pippa – brilliant place to have brunch or lunch. Although their website doesn’t advertise it, they can prepare all of their food as a gluten free option, including a stack of GF pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, made from scratch. Clued up on cross contamination, separate toasters etc

    On Sharrow Vale Rd, Otto’s sadly closed & there’s a new cafe/bakery shop called Nue which is totally Gluten Free, everything they sell is GF! Fab.
